~A lodging that blends over 100 years of tradition with IT technology, embracing the stories of our customers~
【Tsurumaki Onsen Motoyu Jinya】

In Tsurumaki Onsen, located in Hadano City, Kanagawa Prefecture, there is an established ryokan that adheres to the concept of 'Breathing life into stories,' crafting services that embrace our customers.

Founded in 1918 (Taisho 7), 'Motoyu Jinya' boasts a history of over 100 years.

Stepping into the purely Japanese architectural style, nestled as if protected by nature in its ten-thousand-tsubo garden, feels like slipping back in time to the Taisho to Meiji era. Despite this, IT technology is utilized within the premises, providing flexible services tailored to real-time situations.

What kind of place is 'Motoyu Jinya,' where tradition and innovation blend to create a new style of stay?

●The History of Motoyu Jinya and the "Matsukaze-no-Ma"

First, let me introduce the history of Motoyu Jinya and the prestigious guest room "Matsukaze," which serves as the symbol of the Jinya.

◆Established over 100 years ago as a long-standing ryokan

Established over 100 years ago as a long-standing ryokan The history of the Jinya dates back to the Kamakura period. At that time, Wada Yoshimori, a close associate of Minamoto no Yoritomo, built the Jinya (lord's residence/office) in the area of Tsurumaki, where abundant hot springs gushed forth and bamboo for arrows was plentiful.

In the year 1918, during the Taisho era, the Mitsui Zaibatsu erected an "Oryo" (reception hall) on the site of Wada Yoshimori's Jinya to entertain important guests. This marked the beginning of "Motoyu Jinya," which later became an inn at the end of the Taisho era.

The traditional Japanese-style architecture of the Jinya, lined against the backdrop of Mount Tanzawa, exudes the weight of tradition and history. Its robust presence reminiscent of the Sengoku period, combined with elegant design, captivates visitors.

Throughout the Jinya, antique artworks collected over generations are displayed. Guests can admire valuable items from the Kamakura and Sengoku periods, including arms and armor associated with figures like Mori Motonari and Miyamoto Musashi, as well as precious artifacts such as chainmail from the Takeda clan and a cross-spear belonging to Uesugi Kenshin.

◆The "Matsukaze-no-Ma," where Emperor Meiji was welcomed and numerous famous shogi and go matches took place

The 'Matsukaze-no-Ma,' where Emperor Meiji was welcomed and numerous famous shogi and go matches took place, stands out among the guest rooms at Motoyu Jinya.

This lavish suite, consisting of three adjoining rooms, was originally built as a guest room named 'Matsukaze' by the former Kuroda clan (Kuroda family) in Oiso to welcome Emperor Meiji during the Meiji era. In the Taisho era, it was relocated to its current location at the Jinya by the Mitsui Zaibatsu.

As the Showa era began, the Jinya became renowned as a venue where leading shogi and go players competed for titles, and to this day, numerous famous matches in both shogi and go continue to take place.

Over 300 title matches have been held here. In the 52nd Oi-sen (King's Title Match) of 2011, Yoshiharu Habu claimed the title, achieving a historic milestone that equaled the immortal record of 80 victories set by Yashiro Yoda XV Meijin, all within the confines of the 'Matsukaze-no-Ma'.

In 2023, under the direction of world-renowned garden designer Kazuyuki Ishihara, the garden of "Matsukaze" underwent a significant renewal. Guests can now leisurely enjoy the beauty of the garden throughout the seasons directly from their rooms.

●Three Charms and Points of Emphasis at Motoyu Jinya

The following is a guide to the three main attractions and special points of interest at Motoyu Jinya.

◆A lush garden that seamlessly integrates with nature

One of the charms of Motoyu Jinya is its expansive garden, covering an area of ten thousand tsubo. The landscape, adorned with trees and flowers that exhibit different facets with each season, as well as meticulously designed ponds and waterfalls, creates a scene that feels like stepping into another world.

Cherry blossoms bloom, crayfish frolic, fireflies dance, and birds chirp.

You can admire the flowers and creatures, or let your imagination wander through the many stories etched in history. It's a time akin to being in a natural art gallery.

◆Healing the mind and body with skin-friendly hot springs

The hot springs of Tsurumaki Onsen, where the Jinya is located, well up from deep underground in the heart of the Tanzawa Mountains. Known for its rich calcium chloride content, this spring has long been famed for its therapeutic effects on conditions such as rheumatism, neuralgia, injuries, and gastrointestinal ailments (when ingested).

The Jinya's hot spring water was the first source to be granted permission for drinking in Kanagawa Prefecture. It's believed to be effective for firming and beautifying the skin by directly absorbing the essential calcium necessary for healthy skin. With low irritation and a pleasantly soft texture, the water, containing both calcium and sodium, is scientifically said to have a similar effect to washing with soap.

You can enjoy the hot springs of the Jinya in both indoor baths within the facility and open-air baths overlooking the garden.

Furthermore, there is a mountain lodge outdoor bath located on a hilltop after climbing the mountain behind, where you can soak in the hot water while feeling the gentle breeze on your heated skin, stretching out comfortably amidst nature. (Please consider the availability of use in inclement weather as there is no roof on the open-air bath.)

◆Providing Better Service to Customers with "Jinya Connect," a Fusion of Tradition and Innovation

At Motoyu Jinya, we strive to offer quicker and better services by sharing customer information through IT.

In 2009, the current owner, who was then an engineer, took over the struggling Motoyu Jinya and implemented management reforms. Analysis of the issues on the ground revealed a lack of information sharing among staff. In response, the owner developed the cloud-based ryokan/hotel system called "Jinya Connect" in-house. By sharing customer information, reservation management, sales analysis, accounting processing, cost management, and survey analysis among all staff, we were able to streamline operations, increase productivity, and focus more on serving our customers.

In 2018, "Jinya Connect" received the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Award at the Japan Service Awards. It has continued to evolve since then, using the latest technology to deliver meticulous hospitality.

"Jinya Connect" not only contributes to the efficiency of ryokan operations but also supports guests' comfortable stays. Staff members use smartphones, PCs, and tablets to share real-time information and customer behavior via the cloud. By inputting details such as customer preferences, timing of meals and baths, allergies, alcohol preferences, and birthdays, staff can provide swift and personalized service tailored to each customer's preferences and timing.

Customers can make reservations via the "Jinya Connect" booking engine on the web, allowing them to not only book accommodation but also arrange services within the facility and nearby activities as options in advance.

Even after arrival, customers can use their smartphones to make reservations for facility use, order meals, and make requests to staff. They can also check the availability of private baths and the status of coin-operated laundry facilities in real-time. "Jinya Connect" is currently used by over 550 ryokans and hotels nationwide, contributing to regional tourism and accommodation industries.
